Top Speed Challenge 2016 - Part 1: Predictions

We are 5 days away from our Top Speed Challenge 2016 at the Mojave Air and Space Port.

And we are all wondering: who will take top speed?

For context, we are taking some of our 100|OCT Club members to the Mojave Air and Space Port this Saturday to see how fast their awesome machines can go. Mojave is where Virgin Galactic flights take off and land. It was a backup landing pad for NASA's shuttle program. It is also where most commercial airplanes go to retire or be picked apart when airlines buy better, newer more efficient ones. What a backdrop!

The runway is almost 2.5 miles long, so the Top Speed Challenge will record speed at the 1/2 mile, mile, and mile and a half mark, leaving participants almost a mile to decelerate and come back to more urban speeds.

This event is put on by Runway Racing, LLC. They have run this event for the past 6 years, and they offered to partner with us to fill a few of the remaining slots. We're not sure what cars they have signed up. We've heard more than a few Ford GTs, Ferraris and others, but since we don't know for sure, we'll base our predictions on the cars WE are bringing.

They are:
- Ferrari 488 Spider
- Ferrari F12
- Lamborghini Aventador Roadster
- Ferrari Speciale
- Shelby Daytona Coupe
- Superformance AC Cobra "The Italian Job"

This last one is being built to be the fastest Cobra ever. Its owner, Ted, thinks he can hit 200mph easily with its current configuration. We think he's right about that, but we wonder what kind of crazy you have to be to try that. :-)

We don't know enough about the Shelby Daytona Coupe to even try to predict anything there, so we will focus on the other 4 cars, all exotics. Our bread and butter.

Our current prediction is that the F12 and Aventador will be pretty evenly matched. They should both end somewhere around 200-205 mph. Based on our latest experience at Shift S3ctor's Coalinga event prove that the Aventador is faster at the half mile, but both should reach 200+.

The Speciale was built to be fast around a race track, but its top speed is around 210mph, though will 1.5 miles be long enough to reach it?

The 488 Spider should reach its top speed within the 1.5 miles thanks to these new turbos the Maranello factory added between the 458 and the 488. BUT... It is a Spider. The 458 Spider had an 11mph slower top speed than the 458 Italia. Does the 488 Spider also that this delta?

Benoît's prediction:
1. Lamborghini Aventador Roadster
2. Ferrari F12
3. Ferrari 488 Spider
4. Ferrari 458 Speciale

What do you guys think? Please sound off in the comments and let us know.

I'm sure there's a bet running somewhere here. Let's see how that goes.

And don't forget to come back next week to find out.
